He honed his skills under some of the culinary world&#8217;s brightest talents, including Thomas Keller at the French Laundry in Yountville, CA; Jonathan Waxman at Barbuto in NYC; and Bill Pete at Caf\u00e9 des Artistes, also in NYC. While pursuing her doctoral studies, Martha dove deeply into the cultural history of 1920s Shanghai. During a challenging global period, Shanghai became a sanctuary for individuals fleeing hardships such as America\u2019s depression, rising political turmoil in Eastern Europe, and Australia\u2019s penal settlements. The influx of diverse populations led to a unique culinary fusion, an undercurrent of darker influences, and a flourishing music scene centered around jazz that lit up the city\u2019s nightlife.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d20410a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d20410a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Inspired by this era, David and Martha founded Shanghai Jazz. For 22 years and counting, their distinctive concept has been celebrated as one of the \u201cTop 100 Jazz Clubs in the World\u201d (Downbeat Magazine).
